Project update
-- December 20, 2011
Columbia Containers has recently submitted an additional request to use approximately half of the vacant property to the west of their facility for overflow container storage during the winter/spring 2012, to assist in accommodating demand for grain on their current lease area during their peak period. Port Metro Vancouver considers this request for temporary use to be independent of the earlier Permit application. Given the consistency of this proposal with adjacent land use and with the EVPL Plan, the proposal is expected to be granted in January 2012.
Project overview
Port Metro Vancouver is currently reviewing a Project Permit application from Columbia Containers to expand their operations at 2775 Commissioner Street. This proposed project would consolidate the existing Columbia Containers site (1) with the site immediately adjacent to the west, formerly used as container storage (2). This requires filling and grading a portion of the land between the two sites (3) that is above the high-water line, closing the existing rail access across Commissioner Street (7a) and using another existing rail crossing to the west (7b). The project includes improvements to existing truck accesses to provide better sight lines for arriving and departing vehicles (4). To connect the sites, existing rail tracks will be lengthened (5).
The proposed project will take place in areas classified as green and yellow in the East Vancouver Port Lands Area Plan and complies with all related requirements with respect to height, environment and site design. Subsequent operational activities will be consistent with previous use.
Port Metro Vancouver welcomes public input during the review process, and at this time we anticipate making a decision in spring 2012.
