Our EcoAction Program promotes attainable emissions reduction goals for ocean-going vessels that enter our Port, and rewards those who excel in environmental stewardship. Vessels may qualify for one of three levels of harbour due rates based on implementing one of the emission reduction options within a given category.
The reduced rates, Bronze, Silver and Gold are designed to provide a wide variety of technology and fuel options to vessels in order to promote and build awareness around a number of alternative emission reduction practices.
As acknowledgement of and encouragement to shipping partners who advance the goal of bringing cleaner ships to Vancouver, the Port has introduced the newly established Blue Circle Award for participants in its EcoAction Program for Shipping, a recognition reserved for only the highest emissions reduction achievements.
Blue Circle Award
Our Blue Circle Award recognizes EcoAction Program participants that achieve the highest emissions reductions for the year.
In 2010, Port Metro Vancouver launched the Blue Circle Award for the EcoAction Program for Shipping, a user-friendly financial incentive for shipping lines that reduce emissions of their ocean-going vessels.
Under the EcoAction Program, vessels that qualify will be eligible to receive the newly established Blue Circle Award, a recognition reserved for only the highest emissions reduction achievements.
The Blue Circle Awards honour gold, silver or bronze ratings based on efforts to reduce air emissions, depending on the quality of fuel used and overall emission reductions. Vessel operators can apply for the program at each call or provide an annual declaration for their vessels.
The current recipients of the award are:
- APL (Canada)
- Grieg Star Shipping (Canada) Ltd.
- Hapag-Lloyd (Canada) Inc.
