Statement from Port Metro Vancouver re: Violent Protest at PMV Offices

Dec 16, 2013

At 10:15 am on December 16, 2013, a group of masked protestors carrying bags containing an unknown substance illegally gained entry to Port Metro Vancouver’s offices and attempted to access the Operations Centre, a Transport Canada restricted area. A number of our employees were physically assaulted and property was damaged during this aggressive act.

Proper identification is required in order to gain access to Port Metro Vancouver facilities. Trespassing places our employees and port operations at risk.

We are concerned by the violent actions taken against Port Metro Vancouver and its staff today. The safety and security of our employees is paramount, and we will not tolerate actions which place them in jeopardy. Everyone deserves a safe workplace.

We support constructive, respectful discussion and debate about port activities affecting residents of Metro Vancouver; however, this morning’s hostile display was unacceptable.

We are working with the authorities to ensure that appropriate action is taken and those responsible are held accountable.
