In an effort to highlight the critical importance of rail service to the success of Canada’s Asia Pacific Gateway, Port Metro Vancouver is calling on Ottawa to implement a commercial approach to defining, measuring, monitoring and ensuring a high level of rail service. The Port proposed its recommendations on Friday in a detailed submission to the Transport Canada Rail Freight Service Review Panel.

Holland America’s ms Amsterdam will be the first cruise ship of the 2010 cruise season to call at Port Metro Vancouver when it arrives on April 25, and the first of 58 scheduled calls expected to connect to the Port’s new shore power system. The ship will arrive in Vancouver after sailing from Petropavlovsk, Russia as part of a 114-day Grand World voyage.

Port Metro Vancouver was selected as the 2010 recipient of the ecoFREIGHT Transportation Award at the recent 2010 GLOBE Conference on March 23, 2010.
The award recognizes shippers, carriers, and other transportation service providers that include sustainable transportation choices in their environmental strategies, and demonstrate a leadership role in addressing the impact of freight transportation on the environment.

Port Metro Vancouver’s 2009 year-end cargo statistics report significant growth in grain, specialty crops and petroleum products, a modest increase in export laden container volume, and a decrease in total container count. Overall, the Port’s 2009 total tonnage declined 11 per cent compared to 2008.
